Care for High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all parts of the body. It aids in the production of cell membranes, some hormones, and vitamin D. The cholesterol in your blood comes from the foods you eat and your liver. However, your liver makes all of the cholesterol your body needs.

High blood cholesterol significantly increases your risk for heart disease. Cholesterol sticks to the inside of blood vessels. When it builds up, it can prevent blood from entering your heart, causing a heart attack.

If you need care for high cholesterol, you’re in experienced hands at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Our physicians are specialists in diagnosing and treating high cholesterol. We are the third largest heart program in Pennsylvania and are recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for heart care and heart surgery.

High cholesterol is diagnosed with a simple blood test called a full lipid profile. It shows the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), good cholesterol (HDL) and a fatty substance called triglycerides in your blood. Depending on your age, family history and risk factors for heart disease, your physicians will tell you when and how often you should have your cholesterol checked. We’ll also clearly explain your test results and tell you what they mean to your overall health.

We’ll treat your high cholesterol several ways. If necessary, your physician will prescribe medication to lower your cholesterol. We’ll teach you to eat healthy and tell you the foods you should avoid. We’ll also design an exercise program specifically for you, because staying active is a great way to lower cholesterol.
